How to Find Peace Within

Disconnect from City Life to Reconnect with Yourself

I love going to North Carolina. My husband and I own a house there in the mountains. It’s location makes it difficult to get cellular service and the internet signal is pretty low as well. At first it bothered me that I wasn’t able to connect to my city life which I left back in Fort Lauderdale. But on the very first stay I had no choice but to surrender to not being able to have these little every day luxuries that we take for granted. But as time passed, I was able to really disconnect from my city life, from the external noise, which eventually led me to release my internal noise.

Immerse Yourself in Nature to See, Hear, and Feel the Beauty of Life

I am so grateful now that I have a place where I can actually disconnect. I’m surrounded by nature. I can hear the wind singing with the birds. The tall trees dance to their songs. The sky changes to the most beautiful shades of white, blue, purple, orange, and red that I have ever seen. Depending on the seasons, nature’s canvas changes. During spring the Rosebay Rhododendron line the landscape with shades of light pink and white. Summertime comes and the tall trees are lush and full of green leaves. The grass is bright green and proudly lines the base of the canvas this time of year. My favorite season is autumn. The landscape is full of golden yellows, bright reds, fiery oranges, and deep browns and burgundies. It’s truly a spectacular scene. In winter the landscape is filled with trees without leaves standing strong against the cold temperatures. Winter’s breath, whispers sweet nothings into my ears, enticing me to come out and play in the cold. I’m typically seduced by it and will  go out for a bit until I need to come back inside to shake the chill off. But I love feeling the cold on my face.

Yoga & Breath Help You find Inner Peace

The beauty of nature that this place holds is breathtaking. I love coming because I know I will slow down my steady moving city pace. Aside from breathing crisp and clean air,  and being surrounded by nature, I get to read books that have piled on my table back home. One of my favorite things to do is to practice yoga outside. If the weather permits, I roll out my mat in the middle of our meadow. This is where I reconnect with all of the elements around me, with the earth beneath me, with myself. Out there in the middle of the field, I close my eyes as I sit on the earth, and feel the energy around me. I begin to lengthen and slow down my breath, and soon thereafter, I turn my attention inward. With every inhalation I gain strength. One breath at a time I begin to immerse myself in my surroundings and I find peace within me. With every exhalation I release chatter of my mind, heaviness I may carry, and any negative vibes that may have attached to me. I purify myself with my every round of breath.

I am grateful to be here! I set my intention which I have thought of carefully, and I begin my physical practice. I flow from one asana to the next. It’s a dance beautifully choreographed. After I’m done with my practice, I get up feeling renewed. This happens every single practice. My practice has evolved so much from the beginning of my Yoga path. But the feeling of renewal remains constant.

Bringing Inner Peace Out Into the World

This is why my yoga practice is so important for me. It’s the place where I can find the peace that lives inside of me and where I can bring it out into the world. This is why I can walk around in this peaceful state of being which helps me deal with the stressors of daily life with MUCH more ease. It helps me not react when people or situations want to trigger me. Yoga keeps me calm. This is why I take my practice very seriously. I not only want to practice, but I need to practice. This is why I became a Yoga teacher. So I could show the students that they too could find this state of being with their own practice. While I am a yoga teacher, I will forever be a student.
